Did Cochlear implant surgery in 12 yr old boy who lost his hearing in both ears at the age of 8 yrs. His speech was getting poor, as he was unable to hear anything ,so his speech centre in brain was getting affected .
Cochlear implant surgery was done at the age of 12yrs .Now he is listening very nicely and speech development became very near to normal.
Cochlear implant is a device with two parts.
Internal part is implanted by surgery and external part is applied from outward over scalp.
Patient is implanted and got discharged after five days. SWITCH ON was done after 3- 4 wks and regular mapping is required. This procedure is followed by speech therapy .
COCHLEAR IMPLANT surgery is done in Deaf and mute (dumb) babies ,who are born deaf with no development of speech .Implantation should be done as soon as possible and best results are getting at the age of 1- 2 yrs old baby.
It should not be done after the age of 5-6 yrs.
Speech therapy is required at least for 2-3 yrs after surgery .These babies are PRELINGUALS.
We can do surgery in old age individuals who lost their hearing after full development of speech.
